A few years ago, I was at a holiday celebration and commented on the homeowner's gorgeous wood floors. The oak floors had knots, raised grains, and a beautiful reddish-brown undertone.
However, she told me it wasn't genuine hardwood but, rather, laminate wood flooring.
Finding the perfect laminate flooring is easy. Just follow these three simple rules.
Rule #1: Images should be vibrant and accurate
Whether you choose a wood, stone, or tile look, colors should be vivid and patterns bold. You should be able to see knots, grains, swirls, undertones, and color/veining variations.
Just because it?s synthetic doesn?t mean it can?t look like it came out of the forest!
Rule #2: There should be textures?
Textures put the finishing touch on floors, making them unique. The homeowner in my example had her floors hand scraped; this texture creates color variations between the laminate flooring planks.
Other wood textures include wire-brushed, distressed, and embossed-in-register (EIR).?
Stone can be polished, honed, leathered, or brushed. Embossing enables manufacturers to create by machinery what's usually done by hand or by Mother Nature.
Rule #3: It should have an AC rating of at least 3
Abrasion Criteria is a set of rigorous tests for each laminate product. It's a 1-to-5 rating system that, as the numbers increase, so does the strength.
The failure of just one test can drop the rating! AC-3 is most commonly used for residential purposes.?
Thickness also matters. The best laminate flooring should be 8 mm or higher.?
